Raft: Game Overview

Raft drops you into the middle of an endless ocean with nothing but a hook, a few planks of wood, and a burning desire to not die โ€” play this adventure games game for free. What begins as a desperate scramble for floating debris quickly evolves into one of gaming's most satisfying survival loops: drift, hook, craft, expand, repeat. Your tiny raft grows from a floating piece of driftwood into a multi-story floating fortress complete with farms, water purifiers, shark defenses, and eventually engines that let you steer toward distant islands and the promise of rescue.

The survival systems are genuinely demanding. Hunger and thirst meters tick down relentlessly, demanding a steady supply of fish and purified water. A persistent shark circles your raft, occasionally taking bites out of your hard-earned expansions โ€” and you'll need to craft spears and armor to fight back. But the game's genius is in how it transforms struggle into progress: every piece of floating debris you hook pulls you closer to self-sufficiency, and the first time your raft has enough resources that you stop worrying about immediate survival is a genuinely emotional milestone. The prototype was so well-received on itch.io that it gained over 8 million downloads, leading to a full Steam release in 2022 that sold over 10 million copies. The browser version captures the core survival loop of the full game.

Why You'll Love It

If you're a fan of elegant puzzle games, a good brain workout, and the sheer satisfaction of solving a tricky problem, Raft is tailor-made for you. It's perfect for those moments when you want to unwind with a mentally stimulating activity, offering a refreshing blend of challenge and accessibility. The gradual difficulty curve ensures that you're always learning and growing, making every solved puzzle feel like a true victory.

How to Play Raft

Use your hook (hold Left Click or tap, then release) to snag floating debris โ€” wood, plastic, palm fronds, and barrels. These resources feed into an extensive crafting tree: planks build floor tiles to expand your raft, palm fronds weave into ropes, plastic becomes cups and tools. Manage your hunger by fishing (craft a fishing rod) and cooking on a grill. Manage your thirst by building a water purifier and collecting seawater. The shark is your constant nemesis. It attacks every few minutes, targeting the outer edges of your raft. Craft a wooden spear to drive it away temporarily, or invest in shark bait and metal weapons to kill it entirely (it respawns after a few minutes). Research new crafting recipes by building a research table and feeding it resources. Eventually, craft engines, a steering wheel, and navigation tools to sail toward radio tower signals that advance the story.

Tips & Tricks

1.

Build a second floor early. The shark only attacks ground-level tiles, so placing your most valuable crafting stations (research table, water purifier) on an upper floor keeps them permanently safe.

2.

Don't fight the shark with a basic spear โ€” craft a metal spear first. The wooden spear takes 8 hits to drive off the shark. The metal spear does it in 4 and lets you kill it in 6, buying you valuable building time.

3.

Plant palm trees after your first island visit. Palm leaves are the most consumed resource in the mid-game (ropes, thatch, fuel). A sustainable farm means you stop drifting aimlessly searching for leaves.

4.

Build collection nets along the outer edges of your raft. They passively collect floating debris without requiring your hook, generating resources while you focus on crafting and survival.

Why Play Here?

From Nothing to Everything

Watching your raft evolve from 4 planks to a floating fortress is one of gaming's most satisfying progression arcs.

Survival That Respects You

The early game is genuinely tense, but Raft rewards smart play. Every crafting milestone permanently reduces your survival pressure.

Hidden Story

Beyond the survival loop lies a surprisingly compelling narrative about what flooded the world โ€” and you can pursue it at your own pace.

Started with 4 planks and a hook, now I have a 3-story floating palace with farms, a grill, and shark-proof walls. The progression from desperation to comfort is incredibly satisfying.

The shark stresses me out in the best way. Every time I hear that music cue, my heart rate spikes. Finally killed it with a metal spear after 8 attempts โ€” felt like a true survivor.

I've built a floating garden paradise and I'm not even following the story. The crafting loop is so zen โ€” drift, hook, build, repeat. My raft has a garden, a kitchen, and a bedroom. Living the dream.
